March Madness:  Hoopes-in' It Up at HOckessin

This race at John Hoopes HOckessin Raceway made 2 new tracks in row, and another large turnout.  Twenty-eight racers from 6 different states descended into the Hockessin basement for another round of highly competitive racing on a fast and challenging track.

As described in the Track and Test Drive sections, there is a lot of back and forth on the track that leads (or misleads) the racer into the walls.  There was ample warm up time for the guys to try to get acquainted with the track, but as we all came to realize, it was a Family Affair that day.

With 2 more Hoopes racing at this track, most of us were assured of placing 2 spots lower than we would have liked.  JB made the mistake of running a very hot qualifying round, which placed him in the top group with 3 of the Hoopes.  He wasn't ecstatic about the prospect of racing with those guys.  "I'm surrounded," he said.  But as has become customary at these races, the competition within each group was top-notch.  With very little exception, no one racer ran away from the other 3 racers in his group.

When the finals were run, JB was displaced from the top group by who else, Larry Hoopes, whom JB had beaten in qualifying.  So the top group of the main was all Hoopes, followed by JB, Len Norris, Ken Taylor, and Kevin Chesney.  All eight of these guys turned in terrific 2:30 heats.  The tally was not far off the totals posted in the 3:00 heats.  The top 4 are below.  The full results can be seen at a link below.

The Winners
1st Place: John Hoopes
2nd Place: Joe Hoopes
3rd Place: John "JB" Balson (or is it...)
4th Place: Larry Hoopes
